Newnan Chapter History: How It All Started

In the year of 1991, after much dialogue with B.J. Morgan of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated, Melvinor J. Kendrick invited a group of professional, dedicated, women to her home to discuss the possibility of forming a Newnan Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc.

After these women heard and saw various information regarding The Continentals, they were impressed and concurred that this type of organization was needed in Newnan and surrounding counties.  They immediately started making plans for the installation which was the last weekend in February 1992.  The installation took place at Holiday Inn on Highway 29 (now America’s Best Value Inn).  The charter members were:

Anne Butts                Juanita W. Byrd                    Earnesteen Camp Gracie C. Rease

Gwendolyn Conley Margie Davie Margaret Garrett       Carolyn Henderson

Johnnie Jones Melvinor J. Kendrick, Founder Alice Malcolm

Cathy Moses Germaine Smith           Carolyn Taylor                     Rosa Wilkerson

Newnan became a Continental Societies, Incorporated chapter and a part of the Southeastern Region on Saturday, February 29, 1992 at 2 pm. Representatives from current chapters were present that weekend at the ceremony along with numerous national and regional officers to celebrate this new chapter.

Since the Chapter’s inception, the members have worked hard to fulfill the mission of the Continentals Societies, Inc., continually providing service, and programs for children and youth.
